Notes |
- John Bennett was christened July 10, 1624 at Wiveliscombe, Somerset, England. He was the first of his line to migrate to America per the Hedrick Genealogy, page 262, which also notes that John married Mary Sawyer Berry in Somerset, England, in 1655. They came over as indentured servants, but bought their freedom within 6 months. Rumored to be loyalist/royalist of the King, they were running for their lives from Oliver Cromwell, which was confiscating all property and imprisoning all followers of the king. They settled in King & Queen County, Virginia near the border of Glouchester County. The couple had the following known children:

William Bennett I (1660-1683)
Ann Bennett (1661-1662)
Richard V. Bennett (1662-1694)
Mary Bennett (1667-1738)
•On 29 (illegible month) 1651, Sir William Berkley granted John Bennett 200 acres of land in Northumberland County, Virginia as compensation for transporting four people from England to Virginia Colony. Sometime later, John assigned these 200 acres to Thomas Broughton and Charles Aston. No compensation was stated. This assignment was recorded in September of 1653.
•On 15 Jun 1657, Samuel Mathews granted John Bennett 500 acres in Westmoreland also known as Northumberland County, Virginia as compensation for transporting 5 people to the colony.
•On 27 Apr 1658, Samuel Mathews granted John Bennett 150 acres in Westmoreland also known as Northumberland County, Virginia as compensation for transporting 3 people to the colony.
•On 4 Jun 1658, Samuel Mathews granted John Bennett 210 acres in Westmoreland also known as Northumberland County, Virginia as compensation for transporting 5 people to the colony.
•His will was executed in Northumberland County, Virginia on 25 Feb 1668.
•On 2 Nov 1699 and the 10 Dec 1699, there are records of payment of debts by the estate of John Bennett in the records of Richland County, Virginia.
